TERMS OF REFERENCE: WASH & CONSTRUCTION INTERN
1. Position Information
● Position Title: WASH & Construction Intern (Paid)
● Department: Programs & Business Development
● Location: Dar es Salaam (with regular field visits to Dodoma and project sites)
● Technical Supervisor: WASH & Construction Specialist
● Administrative Supervisor: Program Director
● Contract Duration: 6 – 12 Months (Fixed-Term Internship)
● Target Start Date: Immediate / As per recruitment schedule
2. Organizational Background
Habitat for Humanity Tanzania (HFHT) is a registered Non-Governmental Organization operating in Tanzania since 1986. Seeking to put God’s love into action, HFHT brings together people of all backgrounds to build homes, communities, and hope. Working alongside local communities, central and local government authorities (LGAs), and development partners, HFHT drives strategic interventions under four primary pillars: Affordability, Habitability, Basic Services, and Security of Tenure.
Under its FY2025–2029 Country Strategy, HFHT is executing impactful housing and WASH initiatives including the Innovative Strategies for Sustaibale Housing Initiatives (ISSHS), WASH 4 Food Security, WASH at Marketplaces, DoCARE, and Wajasiriamali Housing Initiatives across Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, and other regions.
3. Objective & Purpose of the Internship
The WASH & Construction Intern will provide hands-on technical and operational assistance to the WASH & Construction Specialist in delivering high-quality, safe, affordable, and climate-resilient housing and WASH infrastructure.
This paid internship offers an emerging technical professional (with at least 1 year of experience) practical field exposure to:
● Affordable housing construction management and quality control.
● Sustainable WASH interventions in informal settlements and public markets.
● Innovative, low-carbon building technologies (e.g., ISSB, rainwater harvesting).
● Stakeholder engagement with Local Government Authorities (LGAs), local artisans, and community groups.
4. Key Duties and Responsibilities
Working under the direct technical supervision of the WASH & Construction Specialist, the Intern will carry out the following tasks:
A. Technical Design & BoQ Support (30%)
1. Assist in preparing, reviewing, and drafting architectural and engineering drawings using CAD/3D software (AutoCAD, Archicad, Revit, or SketchUp).
2. Support the preparation and verification of Bills of Quantities (BoQs), material schedules, technical specifications, and cost estimates for housing and WASH projects in Dar es Salaam and Dodoma.
3. Assist in field site assessments, soil conditions reviews, and water source feasibility evaluations prior to construction.
B. On-Site Construction Supervision & Quality Control (35%)
1. Conduct regular physical site inspections in Dar es Salaam and Dodoma to monitor contractor and artisan adherence to approved technical designs, safety protocols, and quality standards.
2. Track day-to-day work progress against project work breakdown schedules (WBS) and report discrepancies or delays immediately to the WASH & Construction Specialist.
3. Assist in verifying material quality, ensuring all construction materials delivered to site meet required durability, structural, and environmental criteria.
4. Support on-site Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) compliance, ensuring contractors, artisans, and volunteers adhere to safety guidelines and HFHT’s Zero-Harm / Safeguarding protocols.
C. Community Engagement, Training & Volunteer Support (15%)
1. Assist in organizing and facilitating practical site demonstrations and capacity-building sessions for local masons, artisans, and community members on safe construction and WASH hygiene standards.
2. Support the coordination, supervision, and logistical setup of community “Build Days” involving volunteers, youth groups, and project participants.
3. Maintain positive working relationships level LGAs technical officers (e.g., Ward/District Engineers, Environmental Health Officers).
D. MEAL, Documentation & Reporting (20%)
1. Maintain systematic project technical records, including site photographic evidence, inspection checklists, material test results, and daily logbooks.
2. Draft routine weekly and monthly site progress updates, contributing to donor narrative reports and technical risk registers.
3. Support the documentation of lessons learned, innovative low-carbon techniques, and human-interest impact stories from field sites.
4. Perform any other programmatic duties relevant to technical operations as assigned by the Supervisor or Program Director.
5. Expected Deliverables & Key Performance Metrics
● Technical Accuracy: Timely drafting and technical review of assigned BoQs and project drawings within agreed deadlines.
● Site Supervision: Bi-weekly field inspection reports with updated photographic logs and issue trackers for assigned sites in Dar es Salaam and Dodoma.
● Compliance & Safety: 100% adherence to zero-harm OHS standards and Safeguarding practices across monitored construction activities.
● Data & Reporting: Up-to-date physical and digital technical archives (drawings, inspection notes, contstruction milestones).
6. Required Qualifications and Competencies
Education & Experience
● Degree: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Building Construction, Architectural Engineering, Water & Environmental Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or a closely related field.
● Experience: Minimum 1 year of practical/field experience in housing construction, building supervision, or WASH infrastructure projects.
● Professional Alignment: Graduate membership or eligibility for registration with relevant statutory bodies (e.g., ERB, AQRB) is an added advantage.
Technical & Soft Skills
● Software Proficiency: Strong working knowledge of computer-aided design tools (AutoCAD, Archicad, SketchUp, or Revit) and MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
● Technical Knowledge: Basic understanding of National Building Codes, WHO/Tanzania WASH standards, and low-cost/climate-resilient construction practices.
● Field Readiness: Willingness to spend substantial time in field environments (construction sites, informal settlements, marketplace facilities) in Dar es Salaam and Dodoma.
● Language & Communication: Excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and Swahili.
● Interpersonal Skills: High level of integrity, proactive attitude, team spirit, and respect for community-driven development.
7. Remuneration & Working Conditions
● Stipend: A competitive monthly paid internship allowance will be provided in line with HFH Tanzania HR policies.
● Base Location: Dar es Salaam, with official travel to Dodoma and field locations fully facilitated by HFHT.
● Work Schedule: 40 hours per week (Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend flexibility for volunteer build days).
