Habitat Tanzania recognized for leadership on sustainable cities and communities
Habitat for Humanity Tanzania has been recognized as the thematic lead
for Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11): Sustainable Cities and
Communities, in recognition of our leadership and contribution to advancing the
goal in Tanzania.
The award was presented during the Post-High-Level Political Forum on
Sustainable Development and 2026 Voluntary National Review (VNR) Reflection and
Engagement Session, convened by the Tanzania Sustainable Development Platform
(TSDP) under the hosting of the United Nations in Tanzania.
The session brought together representatives from civil society
organizations, the private sector and government to reflect on Tanzania’s
Voluntary National Review and recommendations emerging from the High-Level
Political Forum. Discussions focused on translating these recommendations into
action, strengthening coordination and accountability, and supporting
implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals at national and
sub-national levels.
A milestone for housing and sustainable development
The recognition marks an important milestone in our commitment to
advancing access to adequate and affordable housing in Tanzania. As the
thematic lead for SDG 11 in Tanzania’s third Voluntary National Review (VNR)
reporting process, we have an opportunity to help keep housing central to the
country’s sustainable development agenda.
This work aligns with Dira 2050, Tanzania’s national development vision,
which identifies affordable housing as a specific pillar and aspiration.
Adequate and affordable housing is essential to building inclusive, safe and
resilient communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Strengthening accountability through collective action
At the session, we presented our work on SDG 11. Following an evaluation
by the United Nations Association of Tanzania (UNA), we were recognized for our
contribution to the goal and our role in consolidating progress and milestones
reported by civil society organizations across Tanzania.
This contribution formed part of the wider civil society effort to
document progress and strengthen accountability for the Sustainable Development
Goals, including through the civil society shadow report submitted to the
High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York in July 2026.
This recognition reflects not only our longstanding work, but also the
collective efforts of communities, partners and stakeholders working towards a
more inclusive and sustainable Tanzania.
As we build on 40 years of impact, we remain committed to advancing
housing solutions, influencing policy and strengthening partnerships. By
keeping adequate and affordable housing central to discussions about
sustainable cities and communities, we will continue working alongside
communities and partners towards a future where everyone has a decent place to
call home.
